Try Prayer! It works! Contest in Kampala 2016

 Under a heavy rains, we still managed to hold a secondary school religious competition, Try Prayer! It works! Contest on Saturday 18th June 2016 at St. Peters’ Catholic Parish gardens just in front our office.

More than 13 schools turned up for the function out of 27 invited schools.

The function kicked off with praise and worship conducted by our worship team, there after reciting the Rosary led by St. Joseph’s Secondary School Nagalama.

At exactly 10am the mass celebration started led by Msgr. Gerald Kalumba, the Episcopal Vicar, Kampala Vicariate. Concelebrants were by Fr. Leonard Olobo, CSC, Hcfm Director and other Holy Cross priests plus priests from Nsambya parish.

Msgr. Kalumba urged the students to always be focused to Christ instead of spending more time in materialistic things. He added that many Christians do not believe in the Gospel but they pray for success.

He also urged the students to take a leaf from Fr. Peyton who was focused on Christ (prayer) because this is the basic of our Faith. Msgr. Kalumba added that in order to achieve in life, we must always remain focused to God and leave everything to Him.

On the theme of the day, who is my mother? Who are my brothers and sisters? Msgr. Kalumba said that this theme reflects God’s Mission. He added that during Jesus’ Ministry, He surprised His listeners when He told them that anyone who is ready to do the will of His Father, those that respect God as the supreme controller are His children.

Holy Cross Family Ministries Director, Fr. Leonard Olobo, CSC, thanked the participants for coming and encouraged them to use their religious teachers when answering the question asked come next year, because most of the students did not understand the theme, they interpreted it to today’s life so that they become the winners and also receive the prizes.

He also encouraged them to always pray together as a family at home.

The Guest of honor Fr. Luke Muhindo CSC, (Vocations Director, Holy Cross Congregation) urged students to always listen to the will of God. He called upon them to join the vocation and serve God.

The best students in the 3 categories; Essay writing, poetry and art piece received shs.100,000 T-shirt, board certificate and a Rosary plus their patrons that received shs.50,000,T-shirt and a certificate for the school.

These are the overall winners;

  • Gum Solomon Akena from St. Mary’s college Kisubi was the best in Essay Writing, he scored 86%.
  • Iguru Solomon from Kisubi Mapeera was the best in Art piece, he scored 84%
  • Museveni Robert from BalibasekaS.S.S was the best in Poetry

Every participant managed to walk away with a certificate of participation and a Rosary.

 The “Try Prayer! It Works!” contest derives its name from an experience in the Servant of God Patrick Peyton’s life. While a Seminarian, Father Peyton was stricken with severe tuberculosis. At one point, a frustrated physician said, “Try prayer! We have done all we can for you.” Father Peyton prayed the Rosary through intercession of the Blessed Mother and he made a miraculous recovery, which he attributed entirely to Mary’s intercession.
